Beefranck’s Emporium – Embroidery and Science

by Beefranck on 21 September 2009

Hey everybody! This week I want to take a closer look at some of my favorite stitches from the Embroidery and Science group on flickr. Science may not be the first thing you think of when contemplating needlework, but it is a surprisingly good match.

Psychedelic Amoebia by Karen Cattoire

This psychedelic amoeba was made by Karen Cattoire, one of the top contributors in the group. I’m loving the colors in this piece!

zetetic astronomy by penny nickels

Some pieces, like this one by Penny Nickels, celebrate a made-up science. Penny made this piece celebrating Zetetic Astronomy as part of a nautical swap she was participating in. You can see more from Penny in her photostream or her etsy store.

wind motif

This wind motif from TheeCoyote is another example of the varied and lovely things you can see in the group.

western gray squirrel skull

Shawn Creedan contributes embroideries of animals – and their skulls. Neat!

photosynthesis by flossbox

No post on embroidery and science would be complete without something from Flossbox. Science is a favorite theme for her, and she always manages to make her embroideries adorable as well as informative.

The Curies by lert

Science can get pretty steamy, as lert illustrates here… Get a lab, you crazy kids!

Pinus Panel by Blue Kitty Miniatures

Blue Kitty Miniatures chose a truly miniature subject when she made this freestyle embroidery of a cross section of a pine needle under a microscope. Beautiful.

These are just some examples of the great stuff you can see in the Embroidery and Science Group. You should really go there and check it out!

I agree.
I’m not the biggest fan of science, but I am one of the biggest fans of science and embroidery! :)

In the sort of words of Dinosaur Comics “Science+ Embroidery*= sexy”

*the original quote may have said “music” but who’s paying attention?

Damn, Beefranck. You keep hitting them out of the park with your Emporiums. Remind me to pat you on the back if ever we meet in person.
