I have searched and searched for hippie embroidery and what a great find here! Thank you for writing about this. I was one of those who embroidered on anything I could find. I still have a few pieces and jeans. I now enjoy freeform beadwork.
What I really want to find is a book probably published in 1972-1974. Great book of the hippie embroidery culture of the time.

Alexandra Hart (formerly Jacopetti) has contacted me and has several copies of the original book "Native Funk and Flash" still. She will autograph and send to those who respond fast. She is asking for payment, which is only fair as it is her book/labour of love. Email me if you want the details.

Great Topic! Couple of years ago, one costume museum discussed the fact that they didn't have any "vintage" 60's/70's clothing - the hand embroidered and embellished jeans, tops, etc. I do have one "mainstream" book from the era gotten at a used book store, misplaced at the moment. It's a Sunset book on embroidering on jeans - but it also fits in with the revival of crewel embroidery today.

Arlee,
I feel very honored to be have my artwork included in an article about the "do it yourself and against the machine" hippy movement, in regards to textile art. I totally consider myself a non-conformist Humboldt California Hippy, that moved here from the South (not southern California). I'm proud to be a hippy and to be recognized as one of the free spirits. May more artist shrug off kits and conventionalism, and get back to looking at nature and putting that individual feeling into their art. Let the movement begin!!!!

Another idea in regards to Shi Sha Mirrors. I have also made shi sha mirrors from the inside of a shinny aluminum coated potato chip bag. You can glue them onto a plastic or cardboard backing.

I used to have and (maybe still do in a box) Peter S. Beagle’s “American Denim” it is very large and some great examples of embroidery, embellishing and painting on Denim. I also would like to recommend another book to your list as it is my favorite, Exotic Needlework with Ethnic Patterns, techniques, Inspiriations by Dona Z. Meilach and Dee Menagh published by Crown Publishers, Inc. 1978

Thank you again.
