Showtime! – Beware of Embroidery!

by Mr X on 13 January 2010

It's ShowTime!Hey you! Yeah you! Are you in London this weekend? If you are, pop over to Ealing to check out Beware of Embroidery at the PM Gallery and House.

Detail from Light Perspective by Louise Riley

It features five terrific embroidery artists including Mr X Stitch faves Tilleke Schwarz and Tamar Stone, as well as Laura Splan, Kate Pelen and Louise Riley, whose piece “Light Perspective” is shown in detail above*.

I’m really excited about this exhibition as it really reinforces that embroidery should be taken seriously as an art form, and is a great showcase of talent. Indeed, the gallery says that “the exhibition aims to overturn preconceived ideas about the meaning and impact of embroidery and celebrates the energy and diversity that exists within the medium. The artists will confound expectations as they investigate and experiment with the practice of modern embroidery.” I’m going to see it and I hope you get a chance too.

The show runs from 15th January to 27th February – if you go and see it, be sure to come back here and tell us what you thought!

*We also love these artists, we just haven’t posted about them yet! :)

@Arlee – We’ll have to arrange a Mr X Stitch travelling exhibition to tour the globe showcasing the best stitcheries we can find. If Mohammed won’t come to the mountain… :)

I just went yesterday Jamie and it is fantastic. The highlights for me were both beds: Louise Riley’s ‘Mother of Pearl’ and Tamar Stone’s ‘He Said … She Said …’
How come you got pictures in http://www.mrxstitch.com/2010/01/21/the-cutting-stitching-edge-louise-riley/ ? They had scary “no photos” signs up yesterday – and a watchful guard :-(

@Dumbledad – I’m just a rebel.

Actually the truth is that I got the pictures from Louise. :)
