The Cutting (& Stitching) Edge – Robert Forman

by Mr X Stitch

Robert Forman is a thread painter from New Jersey, USA.

Robert has an unusual approach to using thread, glueing it clayboard to create amazing multi-coloured pieces of work.

It’s fascinating to see how Robert’s technique has developed in the 30 years he’s been painting with threads. His early work explored the initial boundaries of what could be gone with thread and glue.

Clearly this was not challenging enough, and Robert’s later work blends images and creates amazing optical cocktails that are quite amazing.

These pieces of work are quite remarkable, and my mind boggles at the technical prowess required to create them.

They are extremely clever works, and I hope to see them for real one day, so that I can spend time studying them and understanding them. Robert has taken something that we’ve all tried at some point in our childhood, and elevated it beyond all recognition.

You can find out more about Robert’s amazing technique, including much more work and sketches, on his website. I, for one, am excited to see what he comes up with next.

I actually helped hang his show when I volunteered at the Hunterdon Museum of Art in 2000 and thought his work fascinating and beautiful. What a delight to see his work here.

This guy really does know how “to fracture color.” His work has been engaging his whole career – he really does know how to “fracture color” and keep me coming back for more. Viva la Forman
