Hello all, Schinders here.
As you may or may not know, I live in Los Angeles, which means that I am super lucky – Orly Cogan is having her first solo LA show currently at the Charlie James Gallery in China Town. I know most of you know Orly’s work – come on you’re reading Mr. X Stitch – but as a refresher, Orly’s an NYC artist, who “works with vintage, printed fabrics and updates them with personal, feminine imagery using embroidery and other sewing techniques.”
The first time I encountered Orly’s work was at the MAD show Pricked: Extreme Embroidery. I had just begun my work with needlepoint and was so excited to find that there were others out there having similar thoughts. I was immediately drawn to Orly’s pieces, not only were we thinking similar things, but I could see connective threads (if you will) in our influences – Darger , comic books, Americana – I was not alone!

This current show, Love Street , is amazing! To be surrounded by so much stellar stitching was such a joy. The show continues Orly’s themes of post-modern feminism. Cushions with snarky sayings, fiber sweets, naked women vacuuming, getting high… I’ll admit that I’ve already made plans to return next week, if not this weekend.
Man do I love Orly Cogan!
