Lucky Star Stitches | Modern Beadwork

Exploring Etsy with loadofolbobbins!

While the world around us seemingly changes every five seconds, one thing you can always rely on to stay the same is my quest to discover and share the very best of all things needlecraft on Etsy with you all. So donning my well worn explorer gear, I have forced my way through the tangled thread jungle of Etsy and found another talented maker to champion and celebrate. Rather appropriately this month we’re looking at the power a collection of little x’s can hold, delving into the delights of modern cross stitch patterns with the fabulous work of Pippa Lane and her shop ‘Lucky Star Stitches’.

Always a fan of crafting as a hobby, as a youngster Pippa used to stitch a variety of patterns and even won some awards for them at local country shows. Her first job was as a cross stitch sample-maker, stitching patterns for other people moving eventually on to American folk cross stitch, and larger cross stitch, embroidered on Belfast linen and other fabrics, also doing a lot of seed beading and crochet. For a few years Pippa doodled her own lovely mini patterns on graph paper, stitching them up and pleased with the results she dreamed of the day she could make more of her own patterns and sell them. At the time she didn’t know much about the market for them and Etsy had yet to be invented! Thankfully for all of us she has finally been able to realise this dream creating patterns and tutorials that are colourful, fun, easy and a little different to the granny patterns of yesteryear. While always busy exploring new designs, Pippa also likes working in many mediums besides needlecraft and beading. A self-confessed yarn addict who likes decorating, cooking and nesting at home.

What is your earliest stitching memory?

I did my first cross stitch when I was 13, in high school. I remember it well, because it was a pixie on a mushroom. It seemed to take forever to finish – today I could finish it in a hour or two! It was one of my better earlier cross stitches, there were quite a number of duds after that, which for some strange reason I still keep in a drawer (it’s very hard to throw out ANY stitching).

What fires your imagination?

Colour, and lots of it! After stitching so many folk style designs and pastel things, I got a seven year itch and wanted to put some modern colours on my walls. I’m also inspired by miniature things – miniature worlds, miniature veggie patches, lots of “bits” coming together to make a design complete. I expect to expand at some point on miniatures in the future…
