It was a sad day and she was a terrific Lady. The work that Fine Cell Work do is so critically important for the prisoners – I’m glad to be able to help them.

I was deeply sadden to hear the passing of Lady Anne Tree, who founded the Fine Cell Work charity last night as I listened to “Final Word” with Matthew Bannister on BBC Radio 4. I never realised that she was a daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire (Chatsworth House, Derbyshire) and that she did SO much to kick start the idea by sending irrate letters to the Home Office demanding that men and women in prison should do something inspiring and creative more than just “slopping out” and stuck in cells 23 hours a day.
