Gathered Memories

Gathering Memories

Gathering Memories is a community project which aims to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. This will be done through the sale of Project Kits allowing the purchaser to create their own interpretation of memories through the medium of textiles and mixed media.

Gathered Memories

The original project was an Installation of tea dyed silk strands gathered with gold thread, entitled ‘Gathered Memories’ the concept of which suggests how precious memories can be, how they twist and turn yet bounce back when least expected.

This initial creation came from an original concept by Elizabeth Saunders in 2011 for her final degree show. It was then further developed into a larger installation, sponsored by the Theatre Royal in Winchester and Hampshire County Council as a Community Project lasting twelve weeks. The installation has been exhibited at six different venues including the Knitting and Stitch shows in London and the ICHF events in Birmingham. It was last exhibited at Whitchurch Silk Mill as ‘Gathered Memories Revisited’ since when it has been dismantled to start a new journey creating a fresh community project called ‘Gathering Memories’.

The ‘Gathering Memories’ Project Kit contains a tea dyed silk strand taken from the original installation work, together with backing cloth, Bondaweb, iron on Vilene, a selection of beads, threads and a needle. There is sufficient materials for you to complete an A5 piece of Textile art based on your own memories. You may use all or some of the kit items and incorporate some of your own materials too, but your finished piece must include part or all of the tea dyed silk strand. There is a minimum donation of £5.00 for the kit and postage is £1.25. You’ll be able to see the works as they’re submitted on the Gathered Memories tumblr.
