Textile Art Book Reviews

At Mr X Stitch we love to review textile art and embroidery books for you. There are so many great books to discover, packed with needlework inspiration and textile techniques, so we dive into each book to find out what’s good, what’s bad and let you know why you should pick it up.

I love Genevieve Brading, aka Floss & Mischief. I’ve known her for a few years now, and we’ve had some stitchy adventures together. So when she first announced that she was working on a cross stitch book, I was really pleased for her and when I heard that it was going to be a snarky stitching book, I was even happier.

I Got 99 Problems But A Stitch Ain't One

I Got 99 Problems But A Stitch Ain’t One is a collection of 20 cross stitch projects that have a good amount of sass about them. They’re simple to do and pretty much all of them will put a smile on your face.

As with all good books, there’s a good set of tutorials before the patterns start, so you’ll know what to do.

And then the fun starts. With cultural references and the occasional bit of swearing there’s plenty of designs to suit your immediate needs. I like Genevieve’s commentary as there’s some genuine wit in there, which is a refreshing change from the often sincere world of cross stitch.

Obviously there are comparisons that can be drawn with Julie Jackson’s Subversive Cross Stitch, however Genevieve’s designs are sufficiently different to stand out on their own. The phrases are bang up to date and have varying degrees of rudeness – just what you want! 🙂

All in all, 99 Problems is a good fun cross stitch design book that will appeal to people who like their stitching with a bit of attitude. It’s published by Octopus Books and is available from Amazon and all good retailers. Why not get your copy from our Amazon store?
