Book Review – Big Little Felt Universe by Jeanette Lim – Win a copy!

You can do an awful lot of stuff with felt. Our monthly writer Moxie has shown us how you can create all kinds of items using needle-felting, and in Big Little Felt Universe Jeanette Lim shows us how you can make fun, felty versions of everyday objects. It’s great stuff!

After a quick explanation of the basics the book gets stuck into showing you how to take felt and turn it into cakes, computers, cell phones or chopping boards. There are twelve sets of felty scenarios you can create – my personal favourites are the Office set (laptop, mouse and such like) and the house plants.

Jeanette has done a terrific job of creating simplified versions of familiar objects (from simple things like slices of banana, through to complex pieces like power drills) that can be constructed with a needle and thread. You can’t fail to be impressed as you flick through the book and see the pieces that you will be taught how to make. The book is packed with detailed photos, templates and instructions to take you through each step of the construction process – you can’t go wrong!

I think this is a great book as you will learn so many skills that by the time you finish the book you’ll be able to make felted versions of anything you can think of! Millennium Falcon anyone?

Big Little Felt Universe is published by Lark Books and is available from all good retailers. Why not buy it via the Mr X Stitch Amazon store?

  • I’d like to make a faux porcelain tea set for my girls.

  • I would make felt versions of stuff I use every day in my biology lab. Like a Bunsen burner and lab mice.

  • What wouldn’t I make! I’d love to make a felt version of my sewing machine… and I really want to make that felt cactus!

  • I would make all sorts of food for my nieces, and that computer for myself. So cute!

  • i’d make a house plant garden for my window sill, since I pretty much end up accidentally killing all live plants… my thumb may not be green, but it’s definitely crafty 🙂

  • I want to somehow get meta and make a needle-felting tool and partly done project out of felt…

  • A felt dog because my bf doesn’t like real dogs and so won’t let me have one.

  • I want a plush microscope!

  • I’ve always wanted to make a felt mailbox with little felt letters and Velcro postage stamps for the little kiddos in my life….

  • I’ve been trying for ages to get the hang of a few different skills to make a fairy grove-themed 3D playmat for my little niecelets. Being able to felt would solve SO MANY of the problems I’ve been coming up against.

… That and a herd of companion turrets from Portal 2.

  • seriously, perhaps the first plant that I would not completely destroy! I would definately see if I could keep one of those cacti green and then maybe graduate onto the bamboo… but one step at a time… plants scare me, even stitched ones!

  • Maybe a dressform but with a freaky looking head or something

  • I would start making Tim Burton creatures!
