Book Review – Adventures in Needlework… by Jessica Aldred & Emily Peacock

Adventures in Needlework by Jessica Aldred and Emily Peacock

I should start this book review with a disclaimer. I know both Jess and Emily and think very highly of them. Consequentially I had very high expectations for this book and I am pleased to report that it does not disappoint.

Most of you know of Emily Peacock as she is one of the UK’s most recognised needlework designers. Jessica Aldred is the Education Coordinator at the Royal School of Needlework and an RSN graduate. Between the two of them exists a great amount of talent and Adventures in Needlework is a good reflection of their skills.

The book covers four main types of needlework – Canvaswork, Applique, Silk Shading and goldwork – and each section is prefaced by an explanation of the genre and some helpful examples. The techniques are explained throughout the book and, although quite a few of these projects require some prowess, the level of explanation supports you in completing the pieces.

Emily has produced some great designs, and Jess’s technical prowess explains the steps in completing the work. There is a good sized introduction that includes materials and a glossary, which will help you prepare yourself for getting stuck into these designs, and at the end of the book there is a small section on finishing techniques.

I like this book – it’s got an elegant style about it and the projects will definitely help you develop your skills. I think that some of the pieces are definitely not for the faint of heart; the quality of the work means that you should be very proud of them when they are finished.

Adventures in Needlework by Jessica Aldred and Emily Peacock is published by the Guild of Master Craftsmen and is available from all good retailers. If you’re in the UK, why not buy it from Amazon via our bookstore?
