Tomorrow (August 21, 2017) a total eclipse of the sun will be visible from much of the United States, so it seemed fitting this month to put together a collection of needle felt artwork inspired by the heavens. Full of twinkling constellations, distant galaxies, and mysterious planets, these wonderful woollies fire the imagination. Are we alone in the universe? We may never know for sure, but these cosmic creations are certainly out of this world!
Sasha Lelilio is a Russian artist. She uses needle felt to create sweet bear and cat dolls with a twist – some sport tattoos, some are patterned like traditional Gzhel ceramics, but my favorites are these galaxy creatures. Find more of her work in her Etsy shop.
ElvesinGlass is the work of Chinese artist He Jiabei. She creates stunning wearable artwork like these beautiful galaxy bags. Find more of her work in her Etsy shop.
American artist Rebecca Torrington (Through Wool and Space) creates spectacular felt paintings of nebulas and other celestial bodies. You can find more photos on her Facebook page.
PS – If you are lucky enough to be viewing the eclipse tomorrow, don’t forget eye safety! Check out these eclipse safety tips from NASA and enjoy the view only through certified solar filters or eclipse glasses.
