Lorraine Roy - Precarious - Machine Embroidery

Lorraine Roy | Machine Embroidery

Gear Threads Is The Mr X Stitch Machine Embroidery Column - Presented By Urban Threads!

Welcome to Gear Threads, the best in machine embroidered art.

To textile artist Lorraine Roy, crafting gorgeous treescapes is the most natural thing in the world. Growing up on the riverbanks of rural southwestern Ontario, she loved exploring the land, and went on to earn a degree in ornamental horticulture, specializing in native trees. Roy’s love of her subject matter is obvious in her work.

At once realistic and so much richer than ordinary life, Roy’s work uses a unique combination of fabric scraps layered under a transparent tulle, then machine-sewn in place. This technique creates vibrant color and texture, describing not only the trees themselves but also a bit of our spiritual connection to them, and the complex and marvelous things happening beneath the surface.
