Mmm … Goldwork

I was so impressed with the goldwork that I saw at the NEC show, that I bought a book on it. “New Ideas in Goldwork” by Tracy Franklin gives a good insight into how goldwork is created and has some great instructions. Tracy is a former student of the Royal School of Needlework and clearly knows her stuff. There are some contemporary designs shown as examples which, as with most art, you’ll either like or hate. But the book as a whole is a great introduction and really brings the subject within the realms of us mere mortals.
I also like the fact that “bumph” and “spangles” are actual technical terms for things.
The picture is of a piece from WhatKatieDidNext’s photostream on Flickr. She’s done some great stuff. I was particularly impressed with one of her whitework pieces.
