IF YOU READ THESE POSTS, AND ARE OFFENDED, WE’RE SORRY BUT WE DID WARN YOU!
We featured the synaesthetic weaving work of Jeremy Chase Sanders earlier this week. Jeremy uses his gift to translate letters and numbers into colours, which he then uses to weave codes and messages into fabrics. One particular project of Jeremy’s explicitly explored gay culture – the Cumrags project. Here’s what Jeremy says about it.
“Men today take advantage of internet sites like craigslist.org, manhunt.com, and xtube.com to find partners discreetly without having to join a bar scene or frequent cruising spots. The first series of Cum Rags are based on 3 and 4 letter codes that men use on craigslist.org and other sites to describe themselves or the partners they are seeking (i.e. POZ, MWM, HIV-, STR8, VGL).
“The next series of Cum Rags were woven specifically for men who post to xtube.com, an online community on which men share erotic photos and videos. The Cum Rags get mailed to them, used and posted to the online community, and then returned to me.
“The adjacent map shows where the Cum Rags were sent, and puts the project in a global context, linking men around the world together through their shared sexual identities.”
An interesting project with some very creative outputs. Find out more about Jeremy at his website.
