Nicole Dawkins is a Canadian painter and textile artist.
Much of her work centers around sexuality and erotica.
This piece and the next two posted here were featured in a solo showing of her work called Domestixxx.
Nicole had this to say about these pieces: I have created a series of paintings of images of food taken primarily from vintage Betty Crocker recipe cards, which are super-imposed with embroidered images of burlesque, spanking, images of female submission, and vintage porn. I have also machine- and hand-embroidered reclaimed erotic/domestic imagery onto vintage wallpaper.
These works intend to bring to light the parallels between the New Domesticity the resurgence of craft, needlework and knitting and the popularity and re-codification of burlesque and pin-up iconography. The image of Suzie Homemaker baking pies and knitting baby booties, and the image of the exploited and vapid pin-up were for (some, but not all) second-wave feminists, abhorrent symbols of male dominance and female objectification and servitude. Over the last decade or so, these very same images have been reclaimed as empowering by young women (and men) often through the ironic distance of kitsch and through (post)feminist articulations of choice, sexual agency, and of being and pleasing oneself.
You can see more from Nicole (erotic sock monkeys, anyone?) at her flickr photostream or her etsy store. Trust me, you should check it out. 🙂
