Designer, illustrator and children’s book author Alyssa Thomas, the creative force behind Penguin & Fish, knows a thing or two about cuteness.
Her designs are fresh and very playful.
Her new book, Sew & Stitch Embroidery, is a treasure trove of adorable projects. Her patterns and her crisp, clear instructions will encourage even the beginning stitcher to put a needle and thread and get creative.
The book begins with a stitching 101 chapter in which Alyssa writes about the building blocks of hand embroidery — tools, stitches, threads and fabrics.
If you already know these basic you can skip ahead to the project chapters, which she has divided into three sections. “For the Home” features pillows, cozies and runners. “Just for Fun” provides fun plush toys and play mats. And “For Personal Style” offers brooches, scarves and bags.
Alyssa tops it all off with stitch and color guides for all of the projects. Most wonderful of all, the book includes iron on transfers featuring many of her cutest critters.
My favorite project is the Fold Over Clutch, embroidered with a gorgeous feather. I admit to being a bit particular when it comes to my fashion and personal style. I would happily make and carry this delicious little bag anywhere.
