Apart from three years away at University, I have lived within sight of Winter Hill, with its distinctive TV transmitter for all of my life. It has been a constant visible for many miles around. During lockdown we started to climb the hill on a regular basis and have enjoyed exploring the moors and countryside on our daily walks.
It also seemed fitting to stitch this during 2021 as this September marks 125 years since Britain’s biggest rights of way dispute – The 1896 Battle for Winter Hill. This historic event was marked with a walk on Sunday 5th September and followed the route of the original Winter Hill walk in 1896 in defiance of Colonel Ainsworth after he blocked off the moors for private grouse shooting parties.
