By 1859, Rochester, New York, had earned its title of “Flower City” because of its role as the center of the burgeoning nursery and seed industry. In the early 1800’s, the Mt. Hope Botanical and Pomological Gardens was the largest nursery operation in the world, owned by two legendary nurserymen, George Ellwanger and Patrick Barry.
From 1898 through the present, each May Rochester’s Lilac Festival in Highland Park brings visitors from around the world to enjoy more than 500 varieties of lilacs.
This sampler was embroidered by Pamela Miller Ness of Rochester, New York, in June 2021 for exhibition in the British Textile Biennial, to be held in Lancashire in October 2021.
