The Toronto-based artist is pushing boundaries in her mixed-media embroideries by stitching into everything from wood (yes, wood!) to maps.

The stunning house above was a commission. Von Esteban first drilled out the design into birch and then embroidered the house with cotton embroidery floss. The finished piece is 20 x 20 inches.

I’m particularly taken with the brickwork of the house… from the alternating colors of the bricks to the precision of the shapes. Against the birch base, the house has both a solidity and a lightness, as if the thread is dancing along the surface of the wood.

In addition to Von Esteban’s Instagram, she can be reached at her email. I’m so excited to watch this talented mixed-media stitcher’s artwork continue.
