Do yourself a huge favor and start following Casey Von Esteban on Instagram.
The Toronto-based artist is pushing boundaries in her mixed-media embroideries by stitching into everything from wood (yes, wood!) to maps.
The stunning house above was a commission. Von Esteban first drilled out the design into birch and then embroidered the house with cotton embroidery floss. The finished piece is 20 x 20 inches.
I’m particularly taken with the brickwork of the house… from the alternating colors of the bricks to the precision of the shapes. Against the birch base, the house has both a solidity and a lightness, as if the thread is dancing along the surface of the wood.
