We would have to understand that this is one for the established embroiderer, someone who has already begun their education of the arts within this sector. About the artist Kelley Aldridge is an established teacher. She herself graduated from the RSN in 2005, now teaching as a part of the RSN herself within their course programs. Content As stated earlier, the book contains three projects, each outlines with large photographs to follow the methods described. This publication also gives us insight into who the RSN are and where they have stemmed from, making it more than an instruction manual. Who are the RSN? We get a little historical info here. Where has this technique come from? The history of the technique covered within this book is explained, along with temping examples of the methods in visible form. Photography and what makes this book special…. For those with lesser knowledge of The Royal School of Needlework, reading a book published by one of their teachers may seem daunting or too traditional. Think again, look at this sweet example! Yes the technique may take time to learn, but look at this tasty example; its modern and steps away from the traditional, while not compromising on the quality of the method. The instructions within this publication cover everything, right from the start. Thus it is not a book only for those with a wealth of experience; we can all have a go. How to begin? Within the publication, thought has been given to carefully explore what goes on before the final piece is made. A mood board or inspiration board may be put together in order for the Raised Embroidery to be done.... What can we use as inspiration? How about a pin board like this? As you can see, what is special about this book is really the surprise that is isn't just a traditional embroidery book, there is no boredom here, only inspiration..... Close up photography really helps us see the stitches of each piece. What is wrong with the book? If you are brand new to embroidery and confess that really, you don't have a clue, then this isn't the book for you. Why not begin with something a little more 'beginner friendly?' This is certainly one to look at though and if you don't have the technical ability just yet, aim to learn!
