Joyful Hat-Wearing: Met Gala and Royal Wedding

It’s like Christmas for hat-lovers! Wedged between the Kentucky Derby and Royal Ascot, we have two other hat celebrations: The Met Gala and the Royal Wedding.

Even for milliners who don’t have pieces going to any of these major events, they still feel like major holidays.

Let’s just take a moment to talk about this:

I mean, wow!

I’m sure that lots of people think this headpiece looks bizarre or don’t know what to make of it, but I love it. One simple reason why: It’s fun!

The feathers are whimsical … and France McDormand is clearly having a blast with her look! She doesn’t care what people think. She’s wearing it for herself and her own pleasure.

And, really, that’s what fashion and millinery should be about. There are so many serious issues in the world right now; hats shouldn’t add to them. Hats should be an escape and a joyful experience.

Almost nobody wears a hat to the Oscars, but the Met Gala is one event where celebrities do choose to wear hats. Here’s another one, worn by reigning queen of the Met Gala, Rihanna (and created by Stephen Jones):

It’s a pretty safe assumption that both Philip Treacy and Stephen Jones will each have at least one hat at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

In advance of the event, most milliners aren’t sharing photos of the pieces they have going. So next month, I’m sure will be a great opportunity to share some more eye candy!

I don’t want you to leave without any royal wedding hat love, though, so here’s a quick photo of the custom headpiece I made for one of my best friends to wear to a watching party we’re going to on Saturday morning:

If I have the time, I’ll make something for myself to wear, too!

Will you be watching the royal wedding for the hats? Will you be wearing a hat in celebration? Or what were your favorite hats from the recent Kentucky Derby and Met Gala? Please share!
