Striking realism and colorful fancy are natural companions in the work of textile artist Sophie Standing. Born in England and now living in Kenya, Standing has created in a wide variety of media, including ceramics, stained glass, weaving, and dressmaking. Her Textile art celebrates the flora and fauna of Africa, layering detailed freemotion machine embroidery over collages of applique fabric to create majestic images full of color, depth, and personality.
Standing’s work starts with a sketch. She fills the shapes with scraps of fabric from around the world, then stitches over them to fill the images with detail and texture.
