Former Chair of the renowned 62 Group of textile artists Sue Stone and our friends over at TextileArtist.org are releasing a series of free training videos for textile artists all about developing a system for experimenting with textiles. And we’re delighted to have the opportunity to share them with you!
Who are TextileArtist.org?
TextileArtist.org is run by Joe and Sam Pitcher, who are the sons of Sue Stone. Motivated by their mum’s passion and commitment to embroidery and mixed media, they started the site back in 2012 with the aim of producing world-class inspiration and education in the realm of Textile art. TextileArtist.org provides a great creative safe space for its community members, of which there are over 60,000.
And what is the free training all about?
Making Textile art isn’t always as simple as settling down with your tools and materials and hoping for the best.
If you want to make Textile art that you’re proud of, using a visual vocabulary that feels authentic to you, you need to find a little clarity in your process.
Without clarity, how do you even make those first marks? There are so many possible avenues as a textile artist. So many exciting techniques. It can be confusing.
And a confused process leads to a confused visual identity!
Clarity in your process = Confidence in your visual vocabulary
What TextileArtist.org has learned from over 500 interviews is that most of the world’s most celebrated textile practitioners don’t rely purely on instinct or some elusive muse to strike – they have a system in place that brings a sense of clarity to their process.
And that clarity drives them forward and sets them free to push the boundaries of their techniques. And that’s how they develop a confident visual vocabulary that is theirs and theirs alone.
Video 1 (of 4) will help you take the first step towards a more inventive, more productive process by exploring a very simple concept. A concept that forms the basis of any successful system for experimentation.
