Winged Backpacks by Volha Kotova

Felter Skelter - your essential needle felting column from Mr X Stitch!

Without a doubt, Volha Kotova’s winged backpacks are the hottest thing in felt right now. These amazing bags give you wings, and hold your stuff too! Meticulously crafted in realistic and fantasy color combinations, it’s easy to mistake these woolly wings for the real thing, and who hasn’t wished for their very own pair of wings?

I especially love that Kotova shares images of her process in creating these one of a kind bags. Working together with her husband, she says each one takes 4-5 days to complete!

They’re all sold out for now, but Kotova will start accepting orders again in October. If you’ve ever dreamed of soaring with the birds, follow her on Etsy or Facebook to get your hands on one of these beautiful and unique felt backpacks!

What Technique Is This?

Needle Felting is the process of using a notched or “barbed” needle to compress layers of wool into denser felt that can be manipulated to create 3D sculptures. It is different to wet felting, which uses water to combine wool fibres, and these days there are a range of felting tools available that can enable you to make your own soft sculptures with ease!
